Week 3: UROLOGY AND THE EYE.

This week we look at the eye and urology. Without meaning any irony, the eye provides a plethora of clinical images which can be used to test candidates. It doesn't take much to learn what you will need to know, and it's a high yield topic. Urology provides a couple of classic exam topics: the sore testicle and renal colic. Again, these are high yield topics for candidates to look at.

watch.

The RED EYE, SUDDEN VISUAL LOSS, OCULAR TRAUMA and the ACUTE SCROTUM.

The Eye usually features prominently in the examination It provides good fodder for picture based "describe and manage" questions. Examples of hyphaema and other trauma have been asked several times in the past.
An example is shown in the "solve" section below.

The acute scrotum is an important area, as are priapism and renal colic. The author of the chapter on the acute scrotum in Cameron’s textbook,  Gino Toncich, is touching on the scrotum (yes, we think that's funny) during the EMCORE conference. The other topics are covered in the READ section below.

READ.

Below are several high yield topics based on cases from the resus.com.au blog. Have a read! The blogs should open in a new window.
HYPHAEMA - features regularly on the exam.
GLAUCOMA - a huge topic, often poorly understood by emergency trainees.

PRIAPISM - important, has been on the exam, but often put in the too hard basket (sorry!) by trainees when they study.
And two blogs on RENAL COLIC below, firstly the diagnosis.

Secondly the role of ultrasound - a guest post from Professor Will Davies.

solve.

A 7 year old boy is brought to the emergency department by his teacher following an injury to the left eye that morning.

Describe and interpret the photo and outline your management. This is an old style VAQ type question from the previous exam, but it's good for illustrating what your thought processes should be!

And because you're probably thinking about intraoccular pressure, below is a 10 minute video on how to use a tonopen from City University, London.

write.

Commence the homework only after you have done the assessment and watched the videos.

Please write 1 SAQ question on Ophthalmology and one on Urology.  Remember, each SAQ is about *ONE TOPIC* and they have to flow through logically without giving any answers away with subsequent questions.
