There always used to be a full admin question on the old SAQ paper - 1 question out of 8! It's a bit less clear how the admin questions manifest in the new exam. Whether you get a full admin question, or simply a section of several questions directed towards small admin points is up for debate. We tend to favour the latter, primarily as the exam is really set up to have the administration type questions death with as an OSCE, but it's worth being able to say something about major administration topics in total.
The two most important things about administration, are to develop a PROCESS (a series of steps to respond to a complaint, critical incident, develop a guideline etc), and a SYSTEM (a framework of 3-4 things to allow you to analyse an issue for it's antecedent causes, or actions required (major disaster, series of sentinel events etc etc).

Below is a SLIDE SHOW of notes previously discussed. It covers in more detail the topics Luke used to illustrate the ideas of process and system. The sides are modified from an original lecture given by Dr Tim Green at RPA Sydney, during one of our courses. It is one of the best set of admin lecture slides Peter has seen. Some of it relates to the old SAQ, but it is all relevant.

We used to lead off with all the ACEM documents below this post. BUT, last course one of our candidates, Dr Louis Al Saleem, put together some really comprehensive notes on admin, and asked us to share them with future cohorts. He told us he had found admin confusing and difficult until we talked about it at the face to face, and he wanted to share his insights with everyone onve he'd sorted it out in his own head. We looked at his notes, and thought they were amazing. So, a very special thank you to Louis. If you only read one thing this week, read this:

Ok....some riveting reading for you below. Don't spend a lot of time taking notes, but have a page through with a cup of coffee.
There are definitely some things it's worth knowing - the ATS benchmarks are a sitter for an exam.
The last document - the open disclosure framework - is huge (and largely irrelevant). Have a look at 1.1 and 1.3 - these are really the only bits you need to be able to discuss.

The biggest thing about administration questions is working out how to think about them.
In general candidates go wrong because they (as doctors) are used to considering medical problems in isolation, rather than the bigger picture.
Have a try of this question from the old exam.

After a recent significant adverse event following the insertion of a central venous line you have been asked to investigate emergency department central line insertion.
a. List the factors that may contribute to such adverse events during central venous line placement (30%)
b. Describe the measures that may be used to prevent or minimise these events occurring (70%)
