So, hopefully this was a bread and butter question for you all. (It even featured to some extent in the recent Roadblock, but it's just one that you have to be able to answer if it comes up in the exam.) So without further ado, below is our list. There are only three items on it, and it's all pretty straightforward, but you'd be surprised how many people can't reproduce something sensible on an exam. If you think we've missed something, let us know via the VSG.
PLATFORM.
1. ROAD 2. HELICOPTER (Rotary Wing) 3. PLANE (Fixed Wing) |
PROS.
Effective range <200km (after this not time effective) Ambulances are readily available Least transport risk More commonly available equipment Point to point transfer Effective range <500km (depending on exact platform) High speed >350km/hr Point to point transfer Allows winch retrieval for difficult access Can potentially transport multiple casualties Effective range unlimited with refueling stops (Luke has been to Borneo before!) Fastest through the air >600km/hr Can be pressurized to take of level if required Can potentially transport multiple casualties |
CONS.
Not suitable for longer range transfers Limited space for procedures in transfer Slowest over ground Difficult environment: limited space, vibrations, temperature control Cannot be pressurized .: unsuitable for some conditions Increased transport risk Requires specialized training and equipment Difficult environment: limited space, vibrations, temperature control Requires landing strips at either end .: necessitates road legs (less efficient for shorter journeys) Requires specialized equipment Increased activation time compared to road and helicopter. |
