MODULE 14.

We are just over the halfway mark of the content and again we have a slightly easier module, content wise, to allow everyone to take a deep breath and catch up. Neurology is a big topic and it's worth working through the major texts to ensure you have an overview of everything, but to be honest by far the most likely neurology topic is a CT brain showing an abnormality for you to describe and interpret. If it's not a CT, expect an MRI or an LP result to interpret.

READ

Again, like most medical weeks this is a bit of a funny one.

You DO NOT need to read all about the pathogenesis and long term prognosis of Parkinson's disease.

BUT, it would be useful to be able to read a CT head for major medical conditions. This is a common prop in the exam. To this end, we would recommend having a browse through radiopaedia.org which has a lot of high resolution images of CT brains for you to look at, and a brief discussion of the underlying medical issues. In particular we would suggest the following articles:
  1. SUBARACHNOID HAEMORRHAGE
  2. CEREBRAL VENOUS SINUS THROMBOSIS
  3. HYPERTENSIVE HAEMORRHAGE
  4. BRAIN TUMOURS (have a page through the images on the subsequent pages)
There's also some blogs from the resus.com.au site for you to read, covering a couple of controversial neuro issues, as well as a review of CSF results and their analysis. Finally, we have put together a one page summary on the topic of stroke lysis.

solve.

Have a look at the CT scan below. Describe the major abnormality (if you think one is present!) and outline the likely symptoms the patient would experience. Finally, list 5 further investigations you would conduct.

If that's too hard click the link below to be asked the question a different way.
