MODULE 21: environmental medicine
Environmental medicine is one of those "fun" topics, that probably can't be assessed in too much depth in the clinical exam (the clinical syndromes are rare, treatment is not underpinned by any good evidence etc etc). So it's a good topic to do here, just to break up the momentum for a final push into paediatrics. This is a good time to assign some catching up periods if you need to.

READ
There are two topics for you to look at below.
The first is the QAS procedure manual on diving emergencies. Although it's not high level, we've picked it because it gives a neat summary of the various forms of decompression illness and their symptomatology. If you can reproduce it you probably practically know everything you need to about decompression illnesses.
The second is a brief article discussing the major issues in acute altitude illness. Again, it's not too in depth a discussion, but this is probably not a subject you need to go into depth on.

solve.
While Environmental Medicine is not an academically rigourous topic per se, people who often come to misadventure with these issues do so in remote locations, and often need to be retrieved. Retrieval is a prime topic for the exam.
So, for this week's solve:
1. List as many modes of retrieval as you can think of
2. For each outline the effective range
3. For each outline the pros and cons
This is stuff you need to have straight in your head before you sit.
